Okay, so I love cheese… like, really love cheese. It’s kind of funny because my maiden name means ‘cheese maker’ in French! So here I am, continuing with family tradition, as the ‘Keto Cheese Sauce Maker’! That counts… right?
This Keto Cheese Sauce has, no doubt, become one of my most used recipes. I love all the different ways you can use this sauce, whether it be dipping, smothering or used as a sauce! What is your favourite use for cheese sauce?
Why it works
- Heavy cream is reduced down to create a thick sauce without the use of thickeners!
- This Keto Cheese Sauce is loaded with rich, creamy flavour and is very simple to make.
- It’s super versatile! Use this as a sauce, cover your eggs and veggies, or smother your favourite meats!
Keto Cheese Sauce Ingredients
- unsalted butter
- sea salt
- ground black pepper
- garlic powder
- dijon mustard
- heavy cream
- aged white cheddar
Aged White Cheddar – I prefer an aged white cheddar for flavour, but an aged orange cheddar would work also. Any mild cheddar would not be as sharp, so the cheese flavour would not be as intense. This is why I recommend using aged cheddar cheese.
How to make Keto Cheese Sauce
Melt butter in a small saucepan on medium heat. Add garlic, salt, pepper, dijon and whisk. Slowly add in warmed heavy cream and bring to a simmer. Simmer for 15 minutes, whisking often to prevent burning.
Mix in the shredded cheese and cook just until the cheese has melted. Pour over your favourite dishes!
Expert Tips
- Use unsalted butter to avoid a cheese sauce that is too salty. If you only have salted, taste test before adding any salt.
- Refrigerate any leftovers. To reheat, microwave until warm, and whisked to recombine the sauce (it will have separated). If the sauce has become too thick once reheated, a little heavy cream can be mixed in, about 1/2 tsp at a time, until the desired consistency has been reached.

Ever since my daughter went keto, cheese has become a food group for her. We go through cheese like crazy! Eggs too. This will be a nice addition to our sauce collection that the whole family can indulge in! Especially that chicken cordon bleu.
Thanks Analida, I completely agree with your daughter… I LOVE cheese!
I know this is a keto version, but I can’t help imagine how amazing it would be for mac n cheese!! And that, is why I don’t think I could ever be keto. I do think, however, that I could really enjoy this sauce!!

Perhaps there is something to be said that we are named for what we like or we somehow follow what we’re named after. I may not be named cheese but I certainly have eaten my weight in it — or perhaps I wish I had. I love cheese more than sweets. This sauce would be excellent with anything and it would be welcome at our house.
Oh wow, I love the ingredients and sauce does look tempting. This is something that my family would really love so I’m saving this recipe to try.
