Jump to RecipeWho doesn’t love a good ol’ Grilled Ham and Cheese?
I certainly do.
This may sound like a crazy flavour combination, but you haven’t eaten one to its full potential until you’ve had a Grilled Ham and Cheese with dijon on a cranberry loaf!
Recently when I have company for lunch, I hit up my local grocery store for a fresh baked cranberry loaf. I then build a few sandwiches and grill them to crispy, melty perfection. Paired with a Kale Caesar salad, lunch doesn’t get much better, and my guests always leave with a full belly and a happy heart.
I hope you love this Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich as much as I do!
What goes in a ham sandwich?
This Grilled Ham and Cheese is super basic, but by no means plain.
There is mayo, dijon mustard, black forest ham and aged cheddar, all loaded onto some slices of cranberry loaf.
How do you make the best ham sandwich ever?
It’s so easy!
Do you like your cheese ultra melty? Leave it out until it reaches room temperature before building the grilled ham and cheese sandwiches.
For each sandwiches you’ll need two slices of cranberry loaf.
Divide a tbsp of mayonnaise between each slice and spread evenly. Next divide a tsp of dijon between the slices.
Top each slice with the room temperature aged cheddar cheese, layer evenly over the dijon. Sandwich the ham in between both slices of cranberry loaf. Now you’re ready to grill ’em up!
How to grill a sandwich
There are a couple different ways I like to grill these sandwiches. Using a panini grill or on the stove in a skillet.
The panini grill is a bit healthier because you don’t need butter and there is less chance of burning the bread if you aren’t paying attention, but doing it on the stovetop has a bit better flavour because of the butter!
Panini grill method
Heat a panini grill on medium heat. Once hot, place the sandwiches on the grill and cook until the cheese is melty and toasted.
Stove top method
Heat a skillet on medium heat and spread 1/2 tbsp butter on top of each sandwich. Once the skillet is hot, place the sandwich, butter side down, on the skillet. Spread 1/2 tbsp on the other side of the sandwich.
Once the sandwiches have fried for a couple of minutes, check the bottom, and once perfectly golden brown, flip the sandwiches over. Fry until the bottom is also golden brown, then remove and enjoy!
What cheese goes best with ham sandwich?
Personally I think aged white cheddar pairs the best with these Grilled Ham and Cheese sandwiches.
Do you like swiss? Give that a try, or even some brie!
