I hate that store bought pizza sauce has sugar in it. I mean, I get it. Tomatoes are super acidic, so sugar has a more important role than just sweetening up the sauce. It cuts the acidity down.
But honestly? Pizza sauce does not need sugar. Homemade pizza sauce, minus all the preservatives, tastes amazing. With a few simple ingredients, you’ve got yourself a No Sugar Added Pizza Sauce you can make in just a few minutes, so you never have to buy pizza sauce, ever again.

- water
- dried oregano

You won’t even believe how easy it is to make this sugar free pizza sauce. The hard work of blanching and peeling tomatoes, then simmering them down into a sauce has already been taken care of for us by buying organic tomato paste.
Don’t get me wrong, making things from scratch is super exciting and I just love to do it, but sometimes you just don’t have the hour and a half to spare.
Instead we will just empty that can of tomato paste into a bowl and add oregano, basil, onion powder, garlic powder, sea salt and pepper. Whisk it well then add water until you have the desired consistency.
Now it’s ready to be spread over a Fathead Pizza Crust, Keto Chicken Pizza Crust or any other pizza crust you may have.
Expert Tips
- Tomato paste – I always buy organic tomato paste, unless it’s made somewhere like Italy where GMO products are banned.
- Cayenne – do you like a spicy pizza sauce? Start with 1/4 tsp, taste the sauce, and add more if desired.
- I like 3/4 cup water in my pizza sauce, but you may like a thicker or thinner sauce. Start with 1/2 cup water and work your way up.
Can you eat sugar free pizza sauce on keto?
You sure can! If you are going the store bought route, be careful which pizza sauce you choose because they tend to have large amounts of sugar.
Rao’s is a great option, but honestly, once you see how easy it is to make your own pizza sauce, I’ll be surprise if you ever buy another jar of pizza sauce ever again!

Sugar Free Pizza Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 x 5.5 oz can organic tomato paste
- 1 tbsp dried oregano
- 2 tsp dried basil
- 1 ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- ¼ tsp sea salt
- 1 pinch ground black pepper
- ½ – 1 cup water
Optional
- ¼ – ½ tsp dried cayenne for a spicier sauce
Instructions
- Add the tomato paste, oregano, basil, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper and cayenne (if using) to a medium bowl and whisk until fully combined.
- Stir in water until the desired consistency is reached.
- Use immediately or refrigerate using a container with a tight fitting lid.

Homemade everything is so much better. We love making pizza on the grill. This is perfect. I think I might even try freezing some so I will always have some on hand.

Yes! Sugar is needed in tomatoes when making large batches of tomato sauce. But if making a small quantity you barely need any, really. I just don’t get why there’s so much sugar in all tomato products. I remember this used to be an issue when we were living in Poland as too many pasta sauces tasted just too sweet. Easiest option was for me to always make my own. My husband and I are Italian and we just don’t agree with this crazy use of sugar in tomato sauce, it doesn’t even taste right. Even if I’m not on a no-sugar diet I’m totally with you on this one. No sugar in pizza and pasta sauce; just a half teaspoon if making a huge pot.

Sounds good. I bet you could multiply the dry ingredients and make a jar full like taco seasoning. Just shake well and add about 2 1/2 T. to wet ingredients.
