This post has been updated since it’s original publish date because I received a lot of feedback that the buns were too small! I have doubled the recipe to create 4 larger keto hot dog buns. If you liked the smaller hot dogs, this recipe can either be cut in half, or left as is and make 8 hot dog buns instead of just 4.
Well, we are just diving into weenie roast season, which happens to be one of my favourites. Zoey completely loses her mind with excitement whenever I say we are having a weenie roast for dinner!

How to make Keto Hot Dog Buns
These wiener huggers take no time to create, so you can enjoy hot dogs to their full potential in 20 minutes from start to finish.
First things first, you’ll want to turn the oven on to 375 °.
Now grab a medium sized microwaveable bowl and add almond flour, parmesan cheese, baking powder, baking soda, garlic powder, onion powder and sea salt. Give the mix a stir, then toss in the shredded mozzarella. Top with a tbsp of butter then microwave for 45 seconds.
Mix with a wooden spoon, microwave for an additional 30 seconds, then mix again. By now the mozza should be fully melted. If not? Microwave in 10 second increments until it is.
Crack the egg into a small dish and whisk well. Remove 1 tbsp of the egg and set aside, then pour the remaining egg into the almond flour / cheese. Fold the egg in gently using a wooden spoon until fully combined. Gently fold in the vinegar.
Dump the dough onto a non stick baking mat lined baking sheet and form into a log, working with it gently so that the dough does not lose its volume. Divide the dough into four sections, then gently roll each section into a long log. Space the logs evenly around the baking sheet, then brush the set aside egg over top of each log.
Bake in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes, until the tops are golden brown. Let sit for a few minutes to cool before slicing and filling with your hot dogs!

Expert Tips
- Make sure the mozzarella is fully melted before adding in the egg and vinegar.
- Be sure to work gently with this dough. If it is over mixed, you could get breadsticks instead of hot dog buns. The vinegar interacts with the baking powder to create volume, which would be crushed if it was kneaded too hard.
- This recipe is designed to create 4 large hot dog buns. If you prefer smaller buns, divide the dough into 6 or 8 logs.
- When shaping the buns, roll each log out until it is the length of a hot dog.
What low carb side dishes go with hot dogs?
It’s often we don’t add side dishes to weenie roast night, just a pile of dogs and sauce options while the children’s laughter rings through the air. For all the other times I really like to pair hot dogs with salad. Here are a few of my favourites:
- Ranch Cauliflower Broccoli Salad with Bacon and Cheddar
- Low Carb Caesar Salad with Kale and Cheese Crisps
- Low Carb Broccoli Salad with Bacon, Cheddar and Kale
Feel like something chippy? Chips go SO WELL with hot dogs for some reason… I love these Baked Tortilla Chips which I make with low carb tortillas.. they are so easy and fast to whip up, they can even be baked while making these Keto Hot Dog Buns! 😜
How to store Keto Hot Dog Buns
These buns are best if eaten within the day, but can be kept in the refrigerator for about a week.
I like to freeze any leftovers right after we eat to reserve their freshness. Simply toss the buns into a freezer safe ziploc bag and freeze for 4-6 months! They thaw in no time, so you can just pull them out of the freezer a little while before you make your next round of hot dogs.
Frequently asked questions
Can you eat hot dogs on the keto diet?
100%! Depending on your own variation of the keto diet, you’ll want to be careful which variety you buy. Strict keto is all about unprocessed foods so look for a natural hot dog without all the extra garbage you find in cheap hot dogs.
Personally, I don’t like to feed my kids anything processed, so am always spending the extra $ on natural hot dogs.
How many net carbs are in a hot dog bun?
A typical white hot dog bun has 24 g net carbs. Yowza, that’s a lot, hey? One of these Keto Hot Dog Buns? 4 g net carbs!
Is ketchup Keto friendly?
That completely depends on the ketchup you buy. Most ketchup is basically made from sugar. It’s crazy the amount that is used to make this delicious sauce… no wonder it’s so good, right?
There are brands that make ‘no sugar added’ ketchup like Heinz or Primal Kitchen that totally work for the keto diet, though you still have to be careful how much you eat. Alternately you can try and make your own! Check out this recipe from Sugar Free Londoner.

Everyone is talking about how good they look and delicious they sound. Has anyone ACTUALLY made them and tried them? If so what’s your opinion?
I just made this recipe, and it’s definitely a Keto Keeper. Excellent crumb, sliced and held together very well, delicious smell, easy to make, no weird ingredients or extra steps like beating egg whites, only messed up one small bowl since I don’t often pre-beat eggs beforehand as a long-time cook. Cooked in my gas oven at 375 for the 12 min to a nice golden brown and husband really liked. Be warned that they are quite thin as many Keto breads are, but because they hold together so well, they also sliced and served easily. Definitely a hit with me.
This was the best keto bake item we’ve ever baked and we have done a few that were pretty good. We would almost prefer these buns to the normal “boring” hot dog buns.
Hey Cathy! I am so glad to hear how much you loved these hot dog buns! Thanks for the comment 🙂
I make these every few weeks when we have hot dog night. I love them, I replace 1/4 cup almond flour with ground golden flaxseed, I prefer the texture of it that way but first made it following the recipe exactly. They are more dense than traditional buns, but taste like wheat bread. Hope this helps!
Your post is packed with such great info! I have wanted to try out keto for a while, and I never even though of checking whether the condiments were keto as well!
It’s crazy how much sugar is in certain condiments! I’m glad you found this post helpful, thanks Cathleen 🙂
These look delicious and the buns look just perfectly crisp. I’ve never made my own hot dog buns before, but I’m certainly going to have to give it a try now. Thanks for sharing your great recipe!

Thank you Nicoletta 🙂

Thanks Leslie! I hope you love them 🙂
I’m wondering if anyone has made these. Every comment is on how great they look. PLEASE someone who’s made them comment. So often low carb bread is tough or dry.
Hey Dawn! Have you had the fathead dough before? These buns are made from roughly the same dough, to give you an idea 🙂
They were absolutely delicious, I just made them 10 min ago. Definitely a keeper recipe!
Just made these an hour ago for dinner. They are great. They give the impression as if they are going to crumble but I was so pleasantly surprised that they hold extreemely well after I sliced and cold them off a bit. Mine werre slightly salty but I attribute that to me substituting mozarella for monterrey jack. I also missed adding the butter but they still turned out great. They are NOT dry or tough. Just the right amount of elasticity, hold and texture is reminds me of english muffins to give you an idea. Definitely you just need to make them to know if you will like or not but I certainly recommend.
I would love to have this for my snack option any day. This looks delicious and yum.
Thanks Veena !
How fun! I never would have thought you could have a keto hot dog bun! These buns look so delicious and super easy to make! I can’t wait to try them.
So cool, right Elaine? Thanks so much 🙂
Oh these will make me feel a whole lot less guilty this summer when I eat a bunch of hot dogs! My gluten free friends will love them too 🙂 thanks for sharing!
My sister is gluten free and loves them! I hope your friends do as well 🙂
Can you freeze them?
Hey Barbara! Yes you can, I recommend freezing them before you slice them. They can be tossed into a freezer safe ziploc for storage and don’t take long to thaw 🙂
