BBQ Roasted Low Carb Almonds? Is there even such a thing? Now there is! These little gems are packed with BBQ flavour for the perfect low carb snack. They are sweet, salty, spicy, crunchy and have completely stolen my heart.

I’ve been on a snack creating campaign for the past few weeks, tired of the usual cold cuts and cheese. Don’t get me wrong, I love to snack on salami and cheese in between meals if I really need something to get me through ’til the next meal, but it can get a bit boring after a while. I don’t do boring.

I love almonds, but feel like they need some extra… ‘oomf’ if you know what I mean? I’ve been designing different low carb almonds all month, here is the first recipe of many: BBQ Roasted Low Carb Almonds!

I hope you love these intensely flavoured, crazy addicting, BBQ Roasted Low Carb Almonds as much as I do!

Why it works

  1. Intensely flavourful and crazy addicting, these BBQ Roasted Low Carb Almonds are such a great low carb snack!
  2. This beauties are so easy to make! 5 minutes of prep, 15 minutes to bake and some waiting time while these little gems harden up into the crunchiest of snacks.

Ingredients

I can’t wait for you to try these! You’ll have to let me know what you think after you’ve made and tried these beauties. Here is what you’ll need to make them:

  • natural almonds
  • chili powder
  • paprika
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • cayenne
  • sea salt
  • olive oil
  • sukrin gold sweetener
  • worcestershire
  • liquid hickory smoke

Sukrin Gold SweetenerSukrin gold is a low carb sweetener that mimics brown sugar. I use it for lots of dishes including my Low Carb BBQ Sauce and Low Carb Teriyaki Sauce!

Liquid Hickory Smoke – Liquid hickory smoke is amaaaazing. You can buy it in the bbq sauce section of the grocery store for a couple of bucks and also can find it in mesquite flavour as well! I buy the Colgin brand and love it in recipes like this Instant Pot Low Carb Ribs.

How to make BBQ Roasted Low Carb Almonds

You’ll be amazed at how easy these are to make. Here’s how:

Heat your oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a non stick baking mat.

In a medium bowl combine chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, sea salt, sukrin gold and give it a mix. Next stir in olive oil, worcestershire and liquid hickory smoke. Use a rubber spatula to mix the almonds in until they are fully coated in the yummy bbq goodness, then scrape onto the baking sheet and spread out evenly.

Bake for about 15 minutes, flipping halfway, until the almonds have turned dark in colour, but not burnt. Remove from the oven and allow to cool at room temperature until firm, about 4-5 hours.

Expert Tips

  1. Make sure to buy almonds that have not already been roasted! Look for natural almonds.
  2. You want to make sure the almonds are roasted until they are nice and dark, otherwise they won’t be ultra crunchy. That is the goal, right? Just be careful not to let them burn.
  3. It will take the almonds at least 4 hours to dry out enough to be packaged. They will be soft and sticky at first, but after 4-5 hours will be perfectly toasty and delicious!
  4. Store in an airtight container. These beauties will last 2-3 weeks at room temperature.

How to store BBQ Roasted Low Carb Almonds

There are a couple of ways you can store these, depending on how long you would like them to last for.

  • Counter – I keep these low carb almonds on the counter for easy snacking in between meals. They should last 2-3 weeks if kept in an air tight container.
  • Fridge or freezer: Believe it or not, almonds should be stored in the fridge or freezer for optimum freshness. They will last about a year if stored properly in a freezer safe airtight container.

Give the gift of Low Carb Almonds!

These BBQ Roasted Low Carb Almonds make for an excellent gift over the holidays. Get some small mason jars, load ’em up and tie pretty green and red ribbon around them!

Do you know anyone else living a low carb lifestyle? They would love these as a birthday or just-because gift. Make these for when you have guests over, or bring them along with you to a dinner party as a hostess gift!

Why are almonds beneficial for a low carb diet?

Almonds have an insane amount of health benefits including numerous nutrients, bone strength, heart health and more. Here is why they are especially good for a low carb diet:

  • Low in carbs. Almonds are a great snack or carb replacement because they are low in carbs. 1/4 cup whole almonds are only 3.5 g net carbs, but have 7.5g protein and 18g of fat, keeping you fuller, longer.
  • Magnesium. Magnesium is important to help maintain proper muscle and nerve function as well and immune system among others. Getting enough magnesium is hard with a low carb diet because most foods that contain magnesium are high carb. A deficiency could give you muscle pain, anxiety, nausea, heart palpitations, trouble sleeping and more! Luckily, almonds are loaded with magnesium!
  • Calcium. It can be hard to keep up with calcium, which is essential for bone, muscle and hormone health. Almonds have a decent amount of calcium, so snack away!

These are delicious! I’ve made them several times. Even if I don’t have unroasted on hand it still works. (I do decrease the salt then.) I always add more almonds than called for so none of the yummy “sauce” goes to waste. I use 2 pans so they can still be single- layered on the pan. Perfect healthy, flavorful on-the-go snack I package up in 1/4c individual servings so I don’t get carried away! =:)

OMG! You hit the spice combo right out of the ballpark! I followed spices & amounts to a T. I do recommend (for a mess free & perfect way to coat EVERY nut) that you put TWO tbsp olive oil plus the liquid smoke & Worcestershire in a gallon zip-top bag. Squish well, add the almonds, zip & squish the bag to coat all of them-should be no loose liquid left. THEN, pour those almonds into the bowl of spice mixture and stir to coat. There should be little to no spices loose after doing this. Then, just pour the coated almonds straight onto the baking sheet. Mess free & every nut coated perfectly! As for taste? Amazing! Thank you so much! EXACTLY like store bought smokehouse almonds! My hero.

    1. Aleta says:

Awe I’m so happy you liked them so much Lara!! Love the idea of using the zip top bag!

These were really yummy and good level of spice. I did not have any Worcestershire left so subbed soy sauce. Also none of the surkin gold or olive oil (shopping day coming up) so I subbed 2 T of maple syrup for them and it worked great! I just really wanted to make them but not drive to the store in the snowstorm today.
